Bird Dog Training
Our bird dog training program develops bird dogs to their fullest potential by taking the time to know and understand each dog as an individual. It takes hard work, dedication, time and thought to design a unique plan and to train each bird dog. Our bird dog training program enhances natural canine abilities and enthusiasm which enables us to achieve positive results consistently. Whether your bird dog is going to be a grouse or pheasant dog, a field champion or an AKC Master Hunter, our goal is to train a finely polished performer that has impeccable manners and social skills.
Each dog can learn to boldly reach objectives, point staunchly, and to honor its bracemate on point. They can also learn to be steady to wing and shot, and to promptly and tenderly retrieve to hand. Bird dogs can learn to obey all commands and whistle signals readily and willingly. This is when one can truly enjoy and appreciate the presence of a bird dog. The beauty, style, heart and spirit of our companion is what makes a world class bird dog.
Misty Pines incorporates clicker training into bird dog training. Visit Gary Wilkes website, ClickandTreat.com, to read his article with George Hickox about relating clicker training to bird dog training and how to start on clicker basics.
Bird dog training is available through private lessons, workshops, classes, and dog boot camp. Please call to set up appointments ahead of time. Reservations are required for private lessons and may not be immediately available.
Working Young Bird Dogs at Misty Pines
Quail Release Program
Our Fall/Winter bobwhite quail release program is advantageous for all our young bird dogs. Dogs are much happier performing their job they were bred for with their master.
The bobwhite quail release program gives bird dog owners the opportunity to work their dogs on six controlled released quail for an hour for $40. During this time the dogs begin to learn how to use their nose to find birds and their owners learn how to interpret their body language and identify when the dog becomes “birdy” and is working a scent cone.
We rely on them to remain uninjured so that their family members can call for them to return to their coupe. Then some of the family (Covey) members can be released again to continue to work for the dogs. There is no shooting; this is nose work only. The bobwhite quail release program runs from August to April.

Master Bird Dog Training
The Master Hunter dogs are finished, seasoned bird dogs that are breathtaking and beautiful to watch work in the fields and forests. These dogs are the product of hard work and total dedication. They are the pride and joy of their owners, trainers and handlers. The Misty Pines Gun Dog Company Masters are no exception.
A Master Hunting Dog must give a polished performance and demonstrate clearly that it deserves to be qualified as such. The master hunting dog is the complete companion that any hunter would be proud of. To pass at the Master level, the dogs must be exceptional in the categories listed below.
The Master Hunting Dog
Hunting: the dog must show a keen desire to hunt, intelligent use of wind and terrain, and have a bold and attractive manner of running.
Bird Finding Ability: the dog has to show intelligence in seeking objective and an excellent ability to find game.
Pointing: the dog must be intense and staunch. A Master level dog must positively be steady to wing and shot on all birds.
Retrieving: the dog has to deliver the bird promptly, tenderly and absolutely to hand.
Trainability: the dog must be under the handler’s control at all times, handled kindly with a minimum of noise and hacking by the handler.
Honoring: the dog must honor its bracemate on point without any restrain, be it physical or verbal.
A Letter from Jeff
Misty Pines Pet Company has been successfully training dogs for over 40 years. We develop bird dogs to their fullest potential by taking the time to know and understand each dog as an individual. It takes hard work, dedication, time and thought to design a unique plan and to train each bird dog. We develop the rapport and trust in our dogs necessary to develop a bird dog that its owner can always be proud of: a companion that truly loves its work and their master.
Our training program enhances natural canine abilities and enthusiasm which enables us to achieve positive results consistently. Whether your bird dog is going to be a hunting buddy, field champion or an AKC Master Hunter, our goal is to train a finely polished performer that you can be proud of. Each bird dog should learn to boldly reach objectives, point staunchly, and to honor a bracemate’s point. They should also learn to be steady to wing and shot, and to promptly and tenderly retrieve to hand. They should consistently obey all commands and whistle signals readily and willingly. Once these goals are achieved, you will truly enjoy and appreciate the work ethic and devotion that it brings to the Master. This is when we can appreciate the beauty, style, heart and spirit of our companion, a first class bird dog.
Our training grounds consist of over 100 acres of woods, fields, and water. We train with live birds; homer pigeons, chukars, and bobwhite quail as our training birds. Birds are an extra cost to the owner when we incorporate them into your dogs training program.
We are supporters of the wildlife conservation groups such as the Ruffed Grouse Society and hunt wild birds through out the United States. We train for and judge the A.K.C. Hunting Test of Junior, Senior and Master levels.
We train owners and their dogs to achieve their goals. As of this date we successfully have accumulated well over one-hundred AKC titles for our client’s bird dogs success.
We breed the WoodsPoint English Pointers Lines. We have developed these lines over the last twenty years. These are exceptional bird dogs to the finest degree. Our dogs are guaranteed for loving and friendly temperaments and exceptional hunting abilities. All our dogs are kept in the house, and are companions to our children. Puppies are available by reservation. Litters are limited.
May all your hours be winged with pleasure,
